The Life Insurance Lead Follow-Up System: Calls, Texts, and Emails for the First 14 Days

Most life insurance leads are not lost because the prospect said no. They are lost because nobody reached them, or because the agent gave up after one or two tries. A simple, consistent follow-up system turns more of the leads you already paid for into conversations.

Below is a 14-day schedule you can adapt. It assumes you only text people who have agreed to receive texts, and that you honor every stop request immediately.

The first five minutes

Call as soon as the lead arrives. If they do not answer, leave a short voicemail with your name, why you are calling, and a callback number. If the prospect agreed to texts, send a brief message: "Hi Maria, this is Sam with ABC Insurance. You asked for a life insurance quote. I'll try you again shortly, or reply with a good time to talk."

Then call once more within the first hour. Many prospects do not recognize the number on the first ring and pick up the second time.

Day 1: three touches

Aim for three attempts on day one across different times: shortly after the request, late morning or early afternoon, and early evening. Send one email with a short introduction, what you need to give an accurate quote, and a link to book a time.

Keep every message short. The goal is a conversation, not a sales pitch in writing.

Days 2 to 7: steady, not pushy

Call once a day at a different time than the day before. Send one or two helpful emails during the week, such as a simple explanation of how term length is chosen or what affects price. If the prospect agreed to texts, one friendly text midweek is enough.

If you reach them and they are not ready, ask when would be better and schedule it. A specific appointment beats a vague "I'll call you later."

Days 8 to 14: fewer touches, more value

Move to every other day. Send a final email around day 10 or 12 that says you will stop reaching out unless they want to continue, with an easy way to reply. This "closing the file" message often gets a response from people who meant to reply all along.

After day 14, move the lead to a slower nurture list, such as a monthly email, only if they agreed to receive it.

Scripts you can adapt

Opening: "Hi, this is Sam with ABC Insurance. You requested a life insurance quote. I have a couple of quick questions so I can get you accurate numbers. Is now a good time?"

Reason: "What got you looking at coverage right now?" This question tells you whether the need is urgent and how to frame the rest of the call.

Next step: "Based on what you told me, I can have two or three options for you by this afternoon. Would a quick call at 4 work, or would you prefer I email them?"

Track every lead to an outcome

Log each attempt and each outcome: no answer, contacted, quoted, applied, issued, not interested, or invalid. After a month you will see how many attempts it takes to reach most of your prospects and which times of day work best in your market.

If a lead is clearly invalid, such as a wrong number or a person who never requested a quote, report it quickly. Lead Search Pros clients report clearly invalid leads within 72 hours for a free replacement, as explained in our free lead replacement policy.

Stay compliant while you follow up

Only text people who agreed to texts. Honor stop, unsubscribe, and do-not-call requests immediately. Respect calling-hour rules in the consumer's time zone. Keep a record of the consent that came with the lead. Our compliance basics article covers these rules in plain language. It is general information, not legal advice.
